Early Life and Education
Shreya Ghoshal was born in a Bengali Hindu family on 12 March 1984 in Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal, India. But she was brought up in Rajasthan’s Rawatbhata which is near Kota.
Her father Vishwajit Ghoshal is an electrical engineer who used to work for Nuclear Power Corporation. Her mother Sharmishtha is a postgraduate who is an excellent singer.
Shreya started her school from Atomic Central School in Rawatbhata where she completed only till 8th class. After this, she shifted to Mumbai and started further studies from Mumbai itself.
Shreya had joined Atomic Energy Junior College to study science. But she left it midway and took admitted to SIS College and started studying Arts.
Shreya had heard her mother singing and playing the harmonium since childhood. That’s why Shreya started taking music training at the age of 4.
Shreya considers her mother as her first teacher. At the age of 6, her mother started training him in classical music. She learned music for 18 months from Padma Shri awardees Late Kalyan Ji Bhai and Late Mukta Bhide.
Career
Shreya gave her first stage performance at the age of 6 during a club function. In 1995, she participated in the India Live Vocal Competition organized by Sangam Kala Group in Delhi and won it.
Due to the transfer of her father, Shreya’s family started living in Mumbai. Along with studies, Shreya used to practice singing as well. Her mother used to help Shreya with this. Shreya mostly used to practice Bengali songs.
In the year 2000, Shreya participated in Zee TV’s famous music program Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Child Special. Which was hosted by great singer Sonu Nigam till that time.
Shreya made everyone crazy with her voice and she was victorious in this show. Shreya first recorded a Bengali album in the year 1998. Along with this, he also sang many religious songs.
